When talking about abuse, it often can be easy for church leaders and clergy to believe that this issue is not present in our pews. Yet, abuse knows no boundaries. It devastates communities of all backgrounds, regardless of race, culture, economic status, and religion. Victims and Survivors often suffer in silence because they struggle with shame, embarrassment, and self-blame. They often question whether it is safe to come forward with their story of abuse, asking themselves: will I be believed, will my pastor know how to respond, will my church be concerned with my safety, or will they simply push for reconciliation. Learning about abuse and how to respond is the first and most important step for church leaders and clergy to take to be a place of refuge and hope for all.
