  • MISSION FOCUS:

    Mission with Women and Girls

Restoring women and girls to God’s intentions and purpose is a mission unique to AB Women’s Ministries within our denomination. As you read about our engagement with mission and ministry in the U.S. and around the world, you’ll see clearly our commitment to the empowerment of women and girls. Each of the Mission Focus pages you find on this website is grounded in the bedrock of this mission.

Our commitment to mission with women and girls is so critical to our ministry that we established a national officer position, Coordinator of Mission with Women and Girls, who will help to maintain a focus on matters of significance to women and girls in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and around the world.

AdvocacyThrough social networking, we keep issues with impact upon women and girls present in people’s minds; our virtual mission encounters offer the opportunity to study many facets of critical themes; our ministry focus and mission focus and other resources and events encourage prayer, conversation, education, advocacy, and involvement in vital concerns effecting you, your neighbor, or a woman on the other side of the world.

In a very concrete way, you can be engaged in the empowerment of women and girls through AB Women’s Ministries' Women and Girls Mission Fund. Here’s how the Women and Girls Mission Fund has been at work during the last 12 months:

    • In rural Kenya, seeds and farm tools were purchased for 72 poor women who received training to grow nutritious vegetables and fruit for their families and community. The women are also learning basic entrepreneurship skills to self-sustain and expand the initiative indefinitely.
    • At Cameron Community Ministries, Inc., a neighborhood action program in Rochester, New York, fifth- and sixth-grade girls are learning respect, responsibility, and self-sufficiency through the new R & R for Girls project.
    • In a unique leadership exchange, 2 Kachin Baptist women’s ministry leaders from Myanmar (Burma) made their first-ever visit to the U.S. to lead at our AB Women’s Ministries national conference in July 2016 in D.C., and to connect with Kachin refugees resettled in the U.S.; and 2 American Baptist women leaders traveled to Myanmar in 2016 to lead at a Kachin Baptist women’s leadership training event that drew more than 6,000 women!
    • Providing health and wellness services (medical, dental, counseling, nutrition, etc.), to homeless women and their children through the Mt. Hope Sanctuary residence in Kansas.
    • Providing American Baptist young adult women with leadership capacity development, beginning with a small advisory team of young women that will plan, lead, and develop leaders at regional events throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico
    • A Syrian Baptist woman received a two-year scholarship to study at the Arab Baptist Theological Seminary in Lebanon in preparation for sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ in the Arab world.
    • Provided travel monies for one or more ministry practitioners who work with trafficked women and children in other countries to attend the International Christian Alliance on Prostitution (ICAP) global conference at Green Lake, Wisconsin in May 2017, directed by Lauran Bethell, ABC International Ministries missionary.
    • Gave a grant to North American Baptist Women’s Ministries (NABWU) to enable a member of its Young Adult Women’s Cohort to attend and lead at the NABWU Assembly in Toronto, Ontario, in October 2017.
    • In two impoverished villages in Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh, India, 60 adolescent girls are learning tailoring skills to generate income through self-employment, and 40 women are organizing a Pickles Business as a self-help cooperative to increase their current monthly income by 30 percent, and to avoid working in prostitution.
    • A Baptist woman in the Republic of Georgia has begun a Women's Religious Leadership Academy for Peace to bring together women of different faiths and resource them with skills for peacemaking and conflict management.
    • A grant has been offered to Dreamers' Moms USA/Tijuana A.C. to provide financial aid for legal fees to assist deported mothers to secure documentation to legally return to the U.S. to care for their American-born children.
